DreamWorks Animation Visits Platt College Event Review

As an artist wanting to perfect his or her craft, it is only natural to seek out inspirations that serve as the building blocks of imagination. Recently, this was made possible through a simple visit from DreamWorks Animation…

Their visit was nothing but extraordinary for all of the students at Platt College who attended. The event was modestly presented by Platt College alumni & advisory board member, Tyler Phillip (Senior Animator) and former Platt professor, Craig Dowsett (Senior Character Artist). Both days, students were given exuberant information ranging from animation and modeling principles to a detailed look at what animators and modelers do at a major animation studio.

Both presenters provided a humbling lecture about properly putting together a demo reel. Tyler and Craig presented their own works as an example and defined the key things to be included in a demo reel as well as what should be removed. They also conveyed a realistic look at what the studios are looking for when it comes to hiring students out of college.

Though the events lasted close to two hours for each session, they were worth every precious minute. Tyler and Craig made themselves available to answer any post-lecture questions from students who wanted even more knowledge of the industry. Many students departed with a stronger desire to succeed and a stronger sense of hope that they too will someday land their dream job.

Platt College San Diego would like to thank Tyler Phillips and Craig Dowsett from DreamWorks Animation for their exciting insight into entertainment industry.

  • I remember back in the day I attended the La Jolla Festival animation actually met John Lassiter in person. As I said this was way back when animation arts was in its infancy. Remember the little clip of the desk lamp with a little baby desk lamp? It was premiered at this festival. I know that may date me a little bit. Animation sure has come along way since then. How long before you think human actors and actresses will be obsolete? It is already becoming somewhat difficult to discern animation from reality.
