2011 U.S. Open Sand Castle Competition Winners!
Originally posted on: 2011-07-28

With a turnout of approximately 400,000 spectators, the 31st annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition took place this past weekend in Imperial Beach, California. Among the 32 teams who competed at the Sunday event was our very own Platt College Sandcastle Team!!
Congratulations to the Platt College Sandcastle Team for winning 2nd place in the Creatures of the Sea category at the 2011 U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. Job well done to the team: Victor Silva, Otto Lai, Janie Johnson, Carrie Ann Caranci, Krystiana Brzuza, Geoff Canady, Alana Brannon, Adriana Aguilar, Erica Miller, David Wagner, Gloria Aguilar. The Platt College team is comprised of digital media designers from Graphic Design, Web Design, Digital Video Production and 3D Animation backgrounds.
The Platt College Sandcastle team is no stranger to winning; in fact, this is the second year in a row that the students placed in the Creatures of the Sea event. That’s right…we are the 2010 and the 2011 second place champions for this category!
Although our talented team design their sculpture on paper ahead of time, the true challenge begins on the sand when only ten team members must coordinate their efforts, communicate well and keep their big picture vision in mind to finish successfully. On the day of the event, with the judges and the ever-constant crowd watching, the sand sculpture must be completed within the allotted 5 hour time frame. This year the team sculpted a giant octopus which had taken a boat captive breaking it in half. The sculpture and boat was dubbed the “USS Drowning Man."
We are extremely proud of the cohesive effort our Platt Students put forth during the competition. Headed by Victor Silva, his team led us into Second Place victory two years in a row. In viewing their amazing results you can tell their Digital Media Design training and Bachelor Degrees in Media Arts, definitely paid off!
Victor and his amazing team welcome all Platt students who would like to offer support at the 2012 competition. In addition to the team, we will be looking for enthusiastic students to be our cheerleaders, water bearers and general helpers. If you are interested in participating on the sculpting team, watch for next year’s sign up as we near the 2012 event. As a friendly reminder the Platt sculpting team consists of only 10 members and spots fill up fast. So whether you make the 2012 team of sculptors, general supports and just come out to watch the team in action, let’s all participate in 2012 and help the Platt College team take the competition to the next level and win FIRST PLACE in 2012!
“The competition originated in 1981 when a group of Imperial Beach residents formed the first Sandcastle Days Committee. The U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition Committee is a nonprofit group and part of the proceeds from the event goes to benefit the Boys & Girls Club. Over the years, the event has grown to attract more than 325,000 spectators.” – Wikipedia

UPDATE:
On March 15, 2011, Platt College San Diego students were given the exclusive opportunity to embark on another incredible journey. Last time the journey took them to the land of Tron: Legacy. This time, our students were immersed in the world of DC Universe Online.
Presented by the kind folks at Sony Online Entertainment, the Art & Design of DC Universe Online presentation was not to be missed. Visual Director, Mat Broome gave a digital guided tour of what it took to create an immersive massive multiplayer online title that lived up to the DC Comics brand. The presentation showcased various concept sketches of what Metropolis would look like in a game environment versus the comic form. Broome explained that the world they created had never really been shown in comics. So the task was to design specific details of everything in the city, from railways, government buildings to a simple burger shack.
Concept sketches of Jim Lee’s vision of the characters were shown for the first time to the public, with two amazing cinematic trailers, developed by Blur Studios, shown to cap the event off. Did we mention giveaways were handed out at the end of this event?
Platt College San Diego would like to thank Sony Online Entertainment for the exciting behind-the-scenes look at the making of DC Universe Online.

Tron Legacy: The Artists Behind the Science

UPDATE! If you missed out on our Tron Legacy: The Artist Behind The Science Event, here is a quick rundown…
Recently, Platt College had the privilege to traverse the grid with Digital Domain, the folks behind Disney’s VFX powerhouse movie, Tron Legacy. Their visit enthralled the campus, packing the presentation to its limits while leaving just enough breathing room for the students to catch their breath from spectacles of the event.
The presentation started with a bang as Daft Punk’s heart-thumping beats hyped all attendees for the wonders to come. Inspiration radiated forth as Dan Platt, Lead Modeler at Digital Domain, and Matthias Wittmann, Lead Animator at Digital Domain, showcased an eight minute documentary, detailing some of the visual effects composition and modeling treatment Digital Domain bestowed onto the film. From there, our presenters delivered a two hour tour de force break down of the film’s antagonist, CLU.
Taking various cues from their past work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, the team at Digital Domain was able to render an uncanny image of Jeff Bridges similar to his appearance in the 1982 film Tron. Using some of the latest camera techniques, Platt and Wittmann explained the intricate steps they took to develop more than 350 facial motions and over 165 animation scenes of CLU to match Jeff Bridges’ motions. Platt and Wittmann were also responsible for some of the digital versions of Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), Quorra (Olivia Wilde), and Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) within the film as well.
Like all good things, the event ended with thunderous applause as various students took advantage of the following Q&A session. Many left the event enthused at the career path they had chosen while some were inspired to look further in the 3D animation field. In either case, the event left a lasting experience that will keep all of us on the grid.
Platt College would like to thank Dan Platt and Matthias Wittmann for taking time out of their hectic schedules to come and share their wondrous world with us!
Until then programs,

Details
of the Workshop:
Recognizability is the glue that holds an IP together. Ideally every
element in a game from the smallest plants to creatures to the user
inter…face should have a distinct style that players will associate with
the title even when viewed outside the game world. This kind of
recognizability requires a strong consistent visual style and a
commitment from all stakeholders to continually uphold it. The
development of the style begins with the core game, encompassing
characters, environments, UI and FX. It then extends into cross
departmental collaboration between the Developers, Marketing, PR, Web
presence and all outsourcing. Doing this successfully requires attention
to key elements that will be discussed in this presentation.
This unique workshop will take place on Tuesday, Jan 25th, in the GE Purple Room. Everything kicks off at 3:30PM, so please arrive promptly.

Interview with Eugene Paluso - 2006 Graduate

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today Eugene, so let’s start off with how’s everything since working on Avatar? Did you guys get a lot of praise and some contracts for future projects out of that?
Once Avatar was over, there was a small break of about a month before we ramped back up for multiple feature films. The VFX house I work at would agree that working on Avatar is great for business.
Can you give us some background about yourself, like how you broke into the industry and what were some of the challenges?
For starters, I am a native San Diegan who loves the Chargers, super sad about LT. After a comment by my sister, I checked out Platt and totally dug the environment. I broke into the industry by becoming an awesome video game tester. A tip by a peer at Platt pointed me in the direction of game testing for Sony Computer Entertainment America San Diego in Sorrento Mesa. I did that for a couple of months then moved across the street to the development division. After a referral from a classmate, I interviewed for an internship that led to working with veterans from the movie business. Later on, they called me up to Los Angeles for my first Visual Effects job. There were some challenges early on with contract work ending and having months of down time. I recommend the every artist to save their dough after their first gig. That job can be gone at any moment if you’re a contractor. Life as a freelancer can be tough.
Sounds like you had one crazy journey… Would you recommend internships to everyone that’s trying to break into the industry?
It has been a crazy journey indeed. I do recommend internships for anyone who is able. Three months is the usual length, and at the end you might get a contract. If not, you’ve gained three months of “on the job” experience that can go a long way in your next job interview. Platt played a big role in my career as well, mostly due to people I went to class with. It was my network of friends that threw me leads for gigs here and there. Also Platt’s curriculum prepared me for what was to come.
Between making movie magic and making games, which do you prefer?
Maya is such a beautiful software package. With it, you can build video games, make short films, animate South Park, or create cinema magic. In my experience, there’s more prestige in cinema. The gaming industry is more like a vacation from the movie industry. At the moment, I prefer working in cinema.
I totally agree with you on Maya being the foundation. What other software knowledge would you say is essential for someone trying to get into 3D art?
It depends on the discipline, I guess. If you’re a modeler, you better know Photoshop and know it well. Zbrush, Vue, and Mudbox are definite pluses. Maybe some knowledge of UV unwrap software will come in handy. For animators, I’ve seen Motion Builder being used, but usually it’s just Maya animation. realFlow for dynamics people goes a long way. Also, for any discipline, it’s good to know how to slap a composite together either in After Effects, Shake, or any available composite program.
So just out of curiosity, walk me through your typical day at the office when you’re working on a project…
Before I even get to the office, I know exactly what I’m going to tackle that first few hours. I work in a room with 6 other artists. There is never a dull moment in there. During work, I have a task list that I try to get done. Sometimes things come up, also known as “fires”, and someone has to “put them out”. Sometimes, they’re small “fires”, other times they can be big. They can happen at any moment and are to be avoided! Usually I’ll just joke with the guys as I get work done as the day goes on. Most studios will buy lunches and dinners for the artists during projects that run long. So throughout the day we’ll take breaks, chill, and eat.
As a character animator, are you given a lot of freedom and creativity with your work, or are some things more strict?
Character animators are at the mercy of the client. Whatever the client wants is what the animation supervisor is going to tell you to do. For the most part, there is little “freedom” for animators, Motion Capture (mocap) being one of them. Some projects are mocap driven, which means animators might be cleaning up motion capture. Also, it can be a real bummer when the client doesn’t like what you like.
For any beginning artist, understand that there will be a lot of on-the-job training and learning. On your first job, your employer knows you’re fresh out of college and knows what to expect.
Thanks again for your time Eugene, everyone here at Platt is proud to see your success and we’re looking forward to what else you pull out from the magician’s hat!

About Fabio
Sasso
Fabio Sasso began as designer in 1995-96. He obtained his degree in graphic
design and continued to work professionally since 1998 in Brazil. He and his
friend, Fabiano Meneghetti, currently run a small web design studio named Zee.
In December of 2006, he began his blog, (Abduzeedo), a design blog that draws in
more than a hundred thousand design enthusiasts a day and almost three million
a month. Platt Blog also had the chance to get a quick chat session with Fabio
himself…
An Interview with Fabio Sasso
Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with us at Platt Blog. So let us we start out simple and maybe if you can give us a rundown about what is it like being Fabio Sasso and where did everything start?
First off I would like to thank you for the opportunity to do this interview and Platt College for inviting me to visit the college and talk to the students, I am stoked!
To your question, I am just a regular Brazilian guy who loves design; I have always been like that. However, since the end of 2006 when I started Abduzeedo, I decided that I would share pretty much everything I know and learn when it comes to design. That decision has changed my life.
What drives you to do what you do?
Since I can remember, like when I was kid, I was always drawing and creating things, then when I got my first computer I fell in love, especially when I discovered Photoshop and other graphic applications. That passion is what drives me to do what I do, there are always new things to learn and evolve as a professional and human being, and with the Internet this process has become much easier so we can exchange information with people from all over the world.
Have you ever run into a “muse” block, sort of like a “writers block”?
Yeah, that is part of our lives as creators right, however I believe most of the times that we have this "writers block" is because we do not have enough information about what we have to do.
In your opinion, what do you think are the important fundamentals of being a great designer?
A great designer in my opinion is the one that understands that we are designing something with a target audience in mind and not to other designers or ourselves, we are not artists in this matter, we do not express ourselves in our designs. We are simply the middleman between the client and the consumer, and our goal is to make the communication between them as clear and efficient as possible.
Your blog “Abduzeedo” is truly remarkable site, what this something you were hoping to achieve?
I have never thought that Abduzeedo would grow or get popular, that is the reality. My only goal was to share things that inspire me and also things that I learn along the way. I believe that is why the blog grew so much. The goal was never to be big but to be useful at least to myself.
If I was a student trying to get into graphic design, what is the one piece of advice you would offer that would not forget?
Keep learning and practicing doing personal work to evolve, however the most important advice I could give is that you must share your work and knowledge. Make sure you put yourself out there using services like Flickr, Behance, Deviantart, Dribbble and others, that is the easiest way to get into graphic design and to promote yourself.
You are stuck on an island, name five things you would take with you?
- A tent
- Matches to make fire. I saw in Man vs. Wild that it is super hard to do that with sticks
- Sketchbook/pencils
- The knife Rambo had in Rambo 1, 2 and 3
- A super hot girl

Mission Trails Regional Park encompasses nearly 5,800 acres of both natural and developed recreational acres. Its rugged hills, valleys and open areas represent a San Diego prior to the landing of Cabrillo in San Diego Bay in 1542.
Centrally located and only eight miles northeast of downtown San Diego, Mission Trails Regional Park provides a quick, natural escape from the urban hustle and bustle.
Mission Trails Regional Park has been called the third Jewel in the City of San Diego Park System. Along with Balboa Park and Mission Bay, it provides San Diego residents and visitors a way to explore the cultural, historical, and recreational aspects of San Diego.
Started in 1974, Mission Trails Regional Park has become one of the largest urban parks in the United States. Originally used by the Kumeyaay, the park is the site of the Old Mission Dam, built to store water for the Mission San Diego de Alcala.
With over 40 miles of trails, boating on Lake Murray, camping at Kumeyaay Lake, numerous informative hikes, and a state-of-the-art Visitor & Interpretive Center, Mission Trails Regional Park has something to offer everyone.

"My earliest memories of 3D graphics are of me sitting on the floor next to my father's chair, watching the line-by-line rendering of computer generated landscapes," recalls Ryan, an art student who both lives and attends school in the College Area. "I called out requests of what to do next and he indulgently moved the camera through the virtual map or added a new river.""I know this is not a sophisticated program by today's standards," says Ryan, a media arts student at Platt College.. "But the idea that I could recreate things from my own imagination began then."
Today, Ryan is studying the most cutting edge 3D animation and graphic design technology, such as Maya, MotionBuilder, Boujou, After Effects, Photoshop and ZBrush. Ryan has also earned his bachelors of science in physics from Arkansas Tech University, where he was on the Dean's List and in the Honors Society. Later, he served as a teaching assistant at Notre Dame University. His work will be on display at the Mission Valley branch of the San Diego Public Library through the spring.
"The technology grows exponentially, and each year, artists are able to create more dynamic and life-like work," says Meg Leiker, President of Platt College. "It is exciting to see students like Scott expressing their artistic vision and creating professional quality design."
Platt College opened its doors in San Diego nearly thirty years ago, providing the first computer graphic department in San Diego. Today, the purposefully small media arts school offers 300 students bachelor of science, associate of applied science and diploma programs in such fields as graphic design, 3D animation, digital video production and web design and development.

'Inner Story': Downtown is a chief cultural exporter for design students at Platt College
Originally posted on: 2009-02-24
Marketa Hancova’s memories of catch-as-catch-can housecleaning and
halting English are dimmed by the hard work and persistence that marks
her immigration to America almost 20 years ago. San Diego–specifically
Platt College, where Hancova is dean of education–is the richer for her
residency and her love of culture, instilled from day one in her native
Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). A thick Eastern European
accent frames her excellent adopted tongue; her eyes shift and widen as
she draws comparisons between domestic and foreign arts education. Her
allegiances on the topic may lie with her native country, but her
life’s work has taken the bulk of its shape a third of the world away.
This
may seem off-point for a story about Downtown’s stature as a cultural
resource, and in the long run, it probably is. But if the city’s
developers want to build the world-class urban center they say they do,
they’d be well advised to read the material between the lines.
Hancova
is an avid advocate of center-city culture as a teaching aid, a path to
educational excellence and, by extension, to a well-rounded citizenry.
Symphony Towers; the Museum of Contemporary Art; the San Diego
Repertory, Spreckels, Balboa, Civic and Old Globe theaters: Hancova and
her students visit them regularly as the real-life complement to a
national education system that otherwise prepares its target
populations for mediocrity. The idea is to stimulate and inspire
artistic thought, enhancing the quality of classwork and the depth of
the human experience.
Platt, a 300-student Rolando-area school
offering degree and diploma programs in graphic and web design,
multimedia, three-dimensional animation and digital video, has left its
mark on the city core. The students have designed the programs and all
printing material for the Rep’s last five seasons; a second exhibit of
their work at the Central library has just ended; and their designs are
on display four times a year in the foyer of Horton Plaza’s Lyceum
Theatre. They’ve also been integral to visual-arts programs at Silver
Gate and Tierrasanta elementaries and have exhibited prominently at the
Del Mar Fair. Hancova even helps spearhead trips abroad, having
accompanied a group of students to Spain last year.
The world, after all, is the only authentic campus there is.
“What
gives me perspective,” the 45-year-old Hancova said, “is the fact that
I come from Europe. Even though I’m from a [formerly] communist
country, the education was wonderful. It seems luxurious compared to
what we have here. I was exposed to the arts so much. Research [does]
show the correlation between being exposed to the arts and academic
success. The facts are absolutely there.”
She’s right. Wholesale
studies reflect both sides of the picture — arts-based curricula yield
higher standardized test scores and greater critical thinking; take ’em
away, and academic success plummets as dropout rates increase. The
latter can’t augur well for California’s kids. In 2007, the SRI
research institute reported that 89 percent of the state’s schools
didn’t offer sequential courses in the four artistic disciplines —
dance, music, theater and the visual arts — during the 2005-06 academic
year. Moreover, although state law requires such instruction, 29
percent of the schools surveyed offered no instruction in any
discipline during that period.
“I am getting here at the college
students who are, unfortunately in many cases, [culturally] inept,”
Hancova said. “And it’s not their fault. [Elementary and secondary]
school doesn’t fulfill the role that it should, to sophisticate the
students in every avenue. Each student has an inner story. If it stops
at ninth grade and you don’t cultivate it, you’re just stuck on one
level, and you never grow.
“I think that’s a crime.”
English
composition; introduction to algebra; environmental science; film and
society; human behavior; career development; a host of such courses
that seem to have little in common with graphic design: The Platt
curriculum addresses that crime accordingly, just as the Downtown field
trips foster the same awareness. A recent music class found Hancova
appealing for ballet ticket money; in the same breath, she extolled the
virtues of a 1992 Pavarotti-Sting duet and rhapsodized to a clip from
“Madam Butterfly,” hailing the Puccini opera as “music nobody can be
offended by.
“C’mon, my friends! You know this!” she chided as
she sought responses on the Lutheran revolution and the Renaissance
years. As it turns out, they did know it, offering supplemental
material in the form of some pretty decent questions. And that dropout
rate? Hancova said it’s at around 15 percent at Platt; other such
schools sometimes cite their own figures at 80 or above.
Maybe
it’s the thought of next year’s odyssey abroad that keeps everybody
around. Or it might be the prospect of that introductory algebra class,
which everybody knows is every student’s perennial favorite throughout
the solar system, hands down. Hancova would like to think the Downtown
jaunts are at least fueling a lot of the interest. If they are, then
she’s hit on something her European counterparts have known for decades
— something San Diego’s contractors have in at least one instance let
slip.
In late 2006, Ion Theatre Company left Downtown’s New
World Stage for the last time, faced with a $50,000 code compliance
bill and the daunting prospect of seeking another home. The group had
been in residence only five months, moving in with the blessing of
Centre City Development Corporation, Downtown’s development arm on the
city’s behalf. Yet the city proceeded to send an army of inspectors,
each with a different opinion on code conformity — one thing led to
another, and Ion was soon on its way to Mission Valley, where it
remains today.
One less Downtown attraction for the potential
homeowner clientele that seeks a true urban lifestyle in all its forms.
One fewer set of shops and restaurants that might have attracted Ion
patronage and thus enriched the center-city cultural and residential
scenes. Above all, one less “classroom” for Platt to visit in a city
core already shockingly bereft of schools. While Platt has a solid set
of wheels in motion, its frequent destination often seems intent on
spinning its own.

San Diego Public Libraries Exhibits Work of Latino Art Students

A partnership between Platt College San Diego and the San Diego Public Library has created an opportunity for
Latino art students to display their work while beautifying local
libraries. At the downtown, Spring Valley and Rolando branch libraries,
dozens of vibrant pieces of graphic art and photography were recently
displayed and will remain available for public viewing through March.
Among the art students selected to participate in the library are
Latinos: Jorge Cervantes, Alejandra Santos, Melina Mendoza and Eduardo
Duarte. The art students say they are honored to have their work
selected for the exhibit because it allows them to share their artistic
vision with the community. “In order for any local art exhibit to truly
reflect the spirit and vitality of the San Diego culture, it must
prominently display the work of Latino artists,” says chairman, Bob
Leiker. “This region was built largely on the vision and work of
Latinos, and that is especially true of the art and culture of
California.”

Students find their way with The Golden Compass...
Michael Fink (X-men, Constantine, Batman Returns), Senior Visual Effects Supervisor for the New Line Cinema release, The Golden Compass gave a well-spoken overview and Q&A of the efforts behind the Oscar Award-winning film. He was joined by Visual Effects Producer Susan Mcleod and two animators.
This field trip offered a glimpse of the highest levels of the animation industry from a production point of view. The Golden Compass was unique because many of the 1200 CG shots required services from as many as four different vendors to complete. The animators spoke about the importance of following naming conventions when sharing files and the difficult task of producing consistent quality effects throughout the film. Matt, an animator on the film, used words like ‘painstaking’ and ‘being in the trenches’ to describe his experience though he was obviously proud to be involved. During the Q & A someone asked Fink about compromises during production.
“In most studios you see a triangular sign with the words ‘quality, time, and money’” he responded. “And then underneath, it says, ‘pick two’”.
Towards the end of the Q&A Michael Fink got a bit emotional after someone asked him how it felt to win an Oscar. “I’ve been in the industry for 30 years…It’s taken my whole life to make this movie.”

Platt College San Diego students visited several beautiful cities in Tuscany and Umbria – Rome, Tivoli, Assisi, Florence and Venice. On their ten days of a very well designed and educational tour the students learned not only the gems of Medieval and Renaissance architecture and painting, but had an opportunity to experience the Mediterranean culture: food, music, fashion, customs, and European graphic design. Our observant students endlessly commented on billboards, graphic styles of menus, advertisements, posters, and event tickets.
It was an excellent expedition and opened new horizons for all of us here at PCSD: Inspired to learn more, to see more and to boldly employ our creativity.
New friendships were created, sketchbooks and journals were filled and a new passion for travel was well established. Our goal of showing our students a new, unexplored path that becomes an inseparable part of Platt College San Diego’s education values were met.
This year, Italy. Next year, Spain!

Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream announced it has awarded Chris Bolor and
Victor Silva with scholarships for their winning artwork that will be
featured in a new mural located at Hawaiian Shaved Ice, 710 Ventura Pl.
in Mission Beach. In addition to beautifying Mission Beach, the mural
will alert hungry beachgoers that ice cream snacks are available nearby.
Chris Bolor's mural design was selected out of several submitted by his
peers at Platt (Media Arts) College San Diego. Bolor is 19 years old
and is working toward a Bachelor of Science in Media Arts (emphasis in
3D Animation) Degree. He plans to graduate in November 2007. Bolor's
design incorporates the playfulness of summer fun on the beach, a
rollercoaster because of its proximity to Belmont Park, NESTLE® ice
cream treats, and bright vivid colors that are sure to liven up the
storefront of Hawaiian Shaved Ice.
Victor Silva will be painting the mural alongside Bolor. Silva is a
second year student at Platt College working toward a Bachelor of
Science in Media Arts (emphasis in 3D Animation) Degree and aspires to
work for Disney.
“We were extremely impressed by the creativity that went into each submission by the Platt College students,” said Diane McIntyre, Sr. Public Relations Manager of Dreyer's Grand Ice Cream. “It was a challenge to select a winner, but we chose Bolor's work for its vibrancy and beautiful tie-in to Mission Beach. We congratulate these talented students and wish them the best of luck in their future careers!”

People who network are more likely to learn about unposted job

interview. That is why Platt College San Diego has developed its own
MySpace page (myspace.com/plattsandiego) to utilize this very notion of networking both in and outside of the college classroom.

Spiderman II CGI Artist Speaks to Platt Students

The Platt College Student Association (PCSA) sponsored guest speaker Vincent Truitner, accomplished Animation / CGI Artist, met with students on Thursday July 22, 2004. Mr. Truitner worked on several renowned films including Spider Man II, The Iron Giant, Matrix Revolutions, and Toy Story 2.
Students watched Mr. Truitner’s work and asked him questions about the industry, gaining a wealth of knowledge and advice. The event was an entertaining, inspiring and educational experience. Given his busy schedule it was a real coup for the PCSA to get Mr. Truitner to visit the campus, thanks in part to his former schoolmate Platt College’s animation instructor Craig Dowsett, but he was quick to point out he was there “to help you guys and girls break into the industry.”
Dean of Education, Dr. Michael Smith was on hand and noted “this is an exciting night for the PCSA, given the fact they put this together at the last minute, the turnout was phenomenal with students from every term and section showing up. There was not an empty seat in the house - standing room only.” Dr. Smith added “I think it is another example of how Platt College San Diego is attracting the best and brightest in the industry. Our students are showing their dedication by taking time out from their hectic lives to make sure they do everything they can to get a leg up in a very competitive industry. It was also nice to see a mix of our day and night students along with faculty and staff attending an event together. I am very proud of the PCSA and the students at Platt College San Diego.”

Platt Students Top Screenplay Contest
Originally posted on: 2003-07-01
Getting noticed in the film business is not easy, especially for those new to the industry. Sure, it might help if your aunt used to date the head of production at Miramax, but what if you don’t have those kinds of connections? Industry insiders say one way to get noticed is to win a contest. That is just what Platt College students Dominique Williams and Jennifer Bandrup did.
Dominique and Jennifer were among 10 Finalists in the 2003 American Gem Short Screenplay Contest. The contest was open to students nationwide and received 632 entries, placing Jennifer and Dominique’s scripts at the very top of a large stack.
The contest, by Filmmakers Magazine, allows finalists access to agents and literary managers, and gets their scripts read by production companies. Similar to HBO’s Project Greenlight, which provides access to Hollywood for neophyte filmmakers, the American Gem contest aims to give those without connections a chance to get their work noticed.
Jennifer’s script, "Klepto", is the story of a young woman who has a problem stealing. During a "shopping" trip, she meets what she believes is the man of her dreams.
Dominique’s script, "Red Light Run", is a tale of an American photographer who falls in love with a prostitute while in India. He and his friends must devise a scheme to rescue her.
"When I first heard I had to write a script (for the class), I thought there was no way I could do it," Jennifer says. "But my instructor, Mike Goedecke, showed me there was a process to it." Neither student thought seriously of entering a contest, but neither could refuse when Platt College offered to pay the entry fees.
"I didn’t think it was good enough," Dominique says. "But Mike convinced me he thought it was." "I never thought I’d even make the Top 50," Jennifer says.
Because there are so many screenplays out there, contests provide a way for agents and production companies to weed out material that is, for whatever reason, unacceptable. Having placed their scripts so highly in a contest is a sign these young screenwriters are headed in the right direction.
"Platt College congratulates Jennifer and Dominique for their outstanding accomplishment," says Mike Smith, Dean of Education. "Hopefully, they will provide inspiration for other Platt students to follow in their footsteps. They have provided our school with a great deal of pride."
